Natural Blue Sumatra Amber - A Truly Unique Piece of the Past!

Amber is fossilized tree resin that has hardened over a span of millions of years to form a durable and organic, gem-like material.  Baltic Amber is likely the most well known of all Ambers and was first discovered washed shore as ocean currents swept up pieces from deposits in marine sediments.  Baltic Amber is composed of pine tree resin that has fossilized over 35-44 million years and is found in alluvial deposits throughout large areas of Northern Europe.  The differences in Ambers is a result of the genus of tree creating the uniqueness characterizing the different categories.

Amber is not only said to protect the living but it is also believed to speed up the journey of the soul after death.  Other than the Baltic Ameba from Poland and Russia, current commercially viable locations include areas of Mexico, Burma, Malaysia, the Ukraine, Dominican Republic and most recently, Indonesia.  Two of the major Amber producing areas of Indonesia are Kalimantan and Sumatra, which produces higher gem qualities of Amber than other locations.

The color of this amber is the main attraction.  Traditional cognac tones of Amber can be found as well as while, red, olive and most importantly, blue violet hues.  Most of this Sumatra Amber is fluorescent under UV light, rarely found in Amber.  Blue is the rarest color of all Ambers and makes up less than 1% of all the Amber mined in Sumatra.  Before the discovery in Indonesia, Blue Amber was found only  in the Dominican Republic and a small amount in Mexico.  This find ranges in age estimated from 23-40 million years old.  It is remarkable to note that when you look AT the pieces of Blue Amber, the reflection of color is Blue but when you look THROUGH it, it looks red or brown.

This Sumatra Amber has not been heat treated nor otherwise altered to enhance its appearance or durability.  All Amber is susceptible to damage from direct UV exposure and it should be stored in a dry, cool place and out of sunlight when not being worn.
